Eliminating hunger. Preserving our natural resources. Ensuring human health. At the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR), that is what we do. We are committed to carrying out the University of Maryland’s land-grant mission of providing the highest caliber of academics, research and University of Maryland Extension services to improve the lives of citizens in Maryland and around the world.
Scholarships and Faculty Support
Too many of the most talented and dedicated undergraduate students are graduating with substantial levels of debt. The prospect of incurring substantial debt often causes students who could have had brilliant careers in agriculture and natural resources to choose other majors simply because another college or university can offer more financial aid. Increases in undergraduate student scholarship funding—both endowed funds and funds for immediate use—will ensure that we can maintain our commitment to keeping our doors open to the best and brightest, regardless of their financial means.
Graduate students conduct research that expands the reach and productivity of our faculty and their discoveries. Their presence in the laboratories and in the fields is invaluable for our research portfolio. Fellowships make it possible for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to successfully recruit and retain graduate students who will become the faculty members and leaders of tomorrow.
Chairs and Professorships
Endowed chairs and professorships allow Maryland to recruit and retain the very best faculty to guide the future of our institution. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources will raise funds for endowing 1 professorship and 1 chair.
The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources will raise funds for the renovation of the Campus Farm, in particular the arena and pavilion section of the Farm to enhance safety and educational instruction.
Programs and Initiatives
The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is focused on expanding several programs and initiatives throughout this campaign:
Food Safety and Security
Faculty are addressing the critical need of producing enough safe food to feed an expanding population and combating malnutrition worldwide, while also taking important steps to eradicate widespread crop diseases that have devastating effects on individual livelihoods and local economies.
Restoring the Chesapeake Bay
Faculty experts are helping to restore the Chesapeake Bay amid myriad challenges—water quality, loss of aquatic life, nutrient runoff pollution and more—by developing solutions to restore aquatic species and providing guidance for farmers and homeowners to minimize their impact on the watershed.
The college is equipping future leaders for excellence in food sustainability. Faculty and staff maintain an academic commitment to cultivating future generations of agro-ecosystem professionals who will advance the food system with an eye toward environmental sustainability and human welfare.
Economic viability and workforce development
The college is dedicated to improving the lives and livelihoods of Maryland citizens through targeted research that helps elevate business practices and retain and expand upon existing facilities and ventures.
Approximately 25 percent of AGNR students study abroad at least once. We want to push this number toward 100 percent. Endowments for study abroad are critical to enabling our students to embark on these transformative opportunities.
