Programs and Initiatives
The College of Education will expand the following programs and initiatives:
Closing the Achievement Gap
Create classrooms, schools and campuses that close the achievement gap and ensure access and inclusion at the college level, improving minority and gender outcomes in K–12 education, and helping to eliminate the school-to-prison pipeline.
Equal Access and Inclusion
Create instructional practices and inform public policy that promotes equal access, inclusion and opportunity for all.
Increasing Literacy Research
Expand two centers that further our understanding of learning and literacy: the Maryland Neuroimaging Center where education researchers use structural and functional MRI to map the brain and understand its processes during learning, and the Maryland Language and Literacy Research Center which explores language acquisition as it relates to reading and English as a Second Language (ESOL).
Early Childhood Education
Create scalable pre-K education and early intervention programs that will be a model for the nation with the Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention.
Terrapin Teachers Program
Strengthen the Terrapin Teachers Program, which allows students to graduate with a science or math degree plus eligibility for certification as a middle or high school teacher.
Classrooms of the Future
Create the classrooms of the future, from simulation programs that prepare teachers for the classroom and alternate-reality games for STEM learning, to blended learning at the highly successful College Park Academy.
Preparing the State's Next Generation of Teachers
Meet Maryland’s need for STEM, Special Education, ESOL and world language teachers with intensive preparation, partnerships with school systems and research in teaching effectiveness.
